Recovering

Sofia is still recovering. She's still in some pain and discomfort and continually on painkillers. However in between some bad periods she's doing really well and almost back to herself, smiling, playing and crawling around.

We're bringing her back to see the surgeon on Mon and should be laying out a timeframe for removing her stent then.

Coming Home Today

We are on our way to pick up Sofia. She's still cranky and on some pain meds but overall she's doing better. We think she'll perk up some once she's home. Unfortunately, she's going to have to get used to having the stent in her throat for a few weeks. It's also made her very drooly and she's just getting used to the new feeling in her mouth.

Here are some pics of her as she has recovered over the last few days. You can see her blowing bubbles in one which means that some air is finally getting through to her mouth and nose!

Surgery Update

Sofia is doing well and should be home in a few days, with the trach as normal. The surgeons said that her airway looked better than expected, with just a small area of soft tissue that had collapsed, and not the scarring they often see from babies who have been intubated for extended periods. They opted for the LTPand took a bit of rib cartilage to open her airway. There is a silicone stent in her trachea as well that will be removed in a few weeks after she heals. Then, if the airway holds up, she will be on the path to decannulation (eventual removal of the trach), hopefully a month after that. The alternative was a one-stage procedure that might have led to much faster decannulation, but would have left her in the hospital sedated for a week and was much higher risk.

So overall we're on a slower, safer path and things are looking better because the damage was less. She's recovering now, and in some obvious pain and discomfort, but hanging in there and we are very happy things went as well as they did.

Here she is in the chilly waiting room with Daddy before surgery. Shortly after that, we handed her over to the anesthesiologist for surgery.

One day to go!

And we are on track. Of course today we had no nurse but then again hopefully if things go well that will become more and more normal!

Sofia is doing great and is very happy. She can't wait to get out of the crib each morning and crawl around and she is pulling herself up to standing a lot (with some help of course).

Daniel was a little fussy last night and needed his mommy but otherwise is trying to be supportive of his sister by being good! Today, he and Daddy ran some errands, including getting a free double kelty stroller back to working condition. [Which btw we got off of freecycle.org, everyone should join!]

We're all hoping for the best tomorrow afternoon!

Happy Easter

Daddy, Mommy and Daniel went to church yesterday morning. Here is Daniel checking out the Japanese garden near the parking lot. He fell asleep in the car after our trip out.

Sofia on the swings!

Sofia was getting jealous that Daniel got to go on the swings so she went today to the park with her mommy, daddy, granddaddy and nurse.

Here she is, absolutely loving it!
