Bath Day

Mommy gave Daniel his first real bath today. He seemed to like it and didn't cry once. We moved him to the isolette quickly afterwards so that he didn't get too cold. Daddy gave him a bottle yesterday. Daniel is now taking one or two bottles a day. He is having some small dips in his oxygen saturation the last couple days so they are keeping an eye on him to see if it is all the new activity. The doctors are trying him on the regular nasal canula today, since the high humidity version sometimes sends water up his nose.

Sofia was started on inhaled steriods last night since her lung xray showed improvement. They weaned her pressure today on the ventilator. The steriods are those similar to what an asthma patient may take, and should help her breathing. Daddy changed Sofia's diaper today for the first time. She managed to partially extubate herself again in the middle of the night Friday, and we got a late night call. She was reintubated quickly and the nurses are keeping a close watch on her and keeping her wrapped as much as possible.

Dear Daniel and Sofia,
Daniel: parents have this perception that photographing their babies while they are being bathed will never embarrass their children in adult life. Your parents were so tasteful and, indeed, you look great. Sofia, I am so proud of your progress, although I know it is slow going. I am certain you are excited about entering the political arena when you grow up, since the last two Secretaries of State (probably) have been female. I spent the weekend with your cousin Layla, and she is very anxious to meet the both of you. She hopes you get to leave the hospital soon so you can play with her. For the record, I know I am the luckiest granddaddy in the world since I have three beautiful grandchildren. Like the song says, "Who can ask for anything more?" Love, granddaddy Ralph
